Bassekou Kouyate – The River Song (041)

Bassekou Kouyate – The River Song

Bassekou Kouyate is a musician from Mali and comes out of a long family tradition of griots. He caused quite some stirr when he decided to take his instrument (the ngoni) out of the traditional practice. The ngoni is usually played sitting, but Bassekou plays standing and with his band he makes beautiful music – energetic, virtuosic and in between west-african traditions and futures. the blues is somewhere in there…

big up to dj johann von preussen, who showed me this record last year in zurich and with whom i had tha pleasure to see and hear Bassekou play live in berlin a few months ago.
